Jenna Scmitz, CPM
Midcoast Midwifery
Jenna Schmitz graduated from Birthwise Midwifery School and received her credentialing as a Certified Professional Midwife in 2008. Working in partnership with Becky Pelchat, Jenna attends homebirth in parts of Southern and Midcoast Maine. As a student and a practitioner, Jenna has had diverse clinical experiences; attending birth in clients’ homes and in free-standing birth centers. Jenna also volunteers as a midwife outside the USA in small rural clinics and busy public hospitals.
As a practitioner, Jenna is deeply invested in the preservation of midwives and homebirth, acknowledging the important roles they have played throughout time. Through practicing the traditional art of midwifery, she hopes to increase knowledge and respect for reproductive processes and to help foster strong and healthy women, families and communities.
In addition, Jenna is committed to increasing the quality and accessibility of midwifery care in impoverished communities. She travels to Haiti once a year to volunteer with an organization called Midwives for Haiti. Her work with this organization includes classroom instruction and clinical supervision of local midwifery students as they complete a one year midwifery certification process. In collaboration with Haiti’s Ministry of Health, Jenna also helped develop an education and support program for Traditional Birth Attendants who attend homebirth in the Central Plateau of Haiti.
In addition to Midwives of Maine, Jenna is also a member of the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives (NACPM) and the Maine Association of Certified Professional Midwives (MACPM).
Jenna lives in West Falmouth, where she gardens and enjoys taking walks in the woods.
